Wackie's was founded in 1976 by Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes - a Jamaican engineer who had worked for Duke Reid at Treasure Isle before emigrating to the Bronx - making it one of the first significant reggae studios and labels built outside Jamaica, and possibly the longest continuously-running American reggae recording studio.
