Duke Vin (Vincent George Forbes, 1928-2012) was a Kingston-born selector who built and ran Britain's first Jamaican-style sound system, Duke Vin the Tickler, in 1955 after stowing away to England on a banana boat. He had apprenticed as a selector on Tom the Great Sebastian in Kingston, and in London his blues-dance sessions in Ladbroke Grove helped seed UK sound-system culture; he was among the founders of the Notting Hill Carnival and played it for decades.
