Sean Paul and the 'dancehall goes pop' authenticity charge

“I do straight dancehall, I don't do pop. My dancehall goes pop.”

As Sean Paul became dancehall's biggest international crossover star, some Jamaican listeners and critics accused him of watering down the sound for pop and R&B audiences and of not deejaying in the hardcore style. Sean Paul consistently rejects the framing, arguing that melodic hits like 'Like Glue' are still authentic dancehall and that mainstream success carries the genre outward rather than diluting it.
