Supreme Ruler of Sound was the Spanish Town sound system of Rudolph 'Ruddy' Redwood, remembered as the birthplace of the 'version'. Around 1967-68, cutting a dubplate of the Paragons' 'On the Beach' at Duke Reid's Treasure Isle, engineer Byron Smith accidentally left off the vocal; Ruddy's crowd-pleasing play of the vocal-less cut in Spanish Town persuaded Duke Reid to start pressing instrumental versions on record B-sides, a foundation of dub.
