The scoop and the folded horn: engineering the slow, heavy bass

Why nearly every reggae sound rests on a folded-horn bass bin, and what its deliberate dip is for.

The scoop bass bin is not built for accuracy. Its folded horn and phase dip are engineered to make bass that is slow, heavy and felt, and to project it across an open lawn.

A box built to be felt

The scoop replaced the earlier quad box during the 1960s and became the near-universal reggae bass bin. It is a folded horn: a low-frequency horn many feet long, folded so it fits an enclosure a crew can lift onto a truck.

Its character comes from a compromise. Front and rear outputs radiate in opposite phase, producing a response dip that makes the bass sound slow and heavy. Rather than a fault, this is the point: it is a tuned low end made for the body, not for a measurement microphone.

Three scoops together stop being boxes and start being a note.

Builders answer the dip by numbers, arraying three or more bins so their mouths couple, and by material, cutting curves from flexible plywood. Rigs such as Jah Shaka's prize this weight over flat hi-fi accuracy.
